Selecting a WordPress Theme to start an online business isn’t just about picking the right look.
If you have spent anytime researching websites and how to create them online you have also probably noticed many people saying how easy it is to use WordPress with its one click install and the many different free plugins and themes to choose from.
Yes it’s easy to install if you have the right information, but that isn’t my first concern, do you really want to set up a business site using nothing but free programs when you yourself want to be taken seriously online and sell the products and services you have on offer.
Finding What’s Right For Your Business
Your theme, just like every other aspect of your business site, is designed to sell – and your theme is only useful if it helps you convert visitors into sales!
There are some variables you need to be aware of such as content and how to create the navigation so before you hit the download button and get that free theme, put on your thinking cap and ask yourself these questions:
What Kind Of Content Do I Have?
It doesn’t make any sense to have a theme that emphasizes photos if your site is being driven by content to exposure you products or services. Look you need images to draw in and engage potential clients but you don’t need page after page of images.
Likewise, if your website is focused on helping people by publishing content that solves problems and then gets them to act by clicking through to a product or service information page, it will make more sense to find a theme where content is the prominent feature. If you’re looking to build an authority site with a mailing list, you should make sure you have those features available so visitors can opt-in to a mailing list, this is usually created on a landing page which should also be a feature of any theme you buy.
Should I Have A Custom Design?
Some popular niches will have themes that have been specifically designed for them. For example, if your business site is based on Valentine’s Day, you’ll find plenty of pink and red romantic themes that just scream “romance”. If your site is focused on a specific product, you might even want to adopt the color scheme of the partner website.
In the last 12 months there have been many advancements in theme design that allow you the ability to completely customise a business site without the huge costs of the past.
As an example Layers is a company that has created a framework for WordPress that is free to download and install, you then have the option of installing a child theme over the top of the framework giving your business the look and feel you need.
Usability & Visability
CSS formatting and navigation is critical to the success of your site. Text that looks ugly, generic and bunched together on the page is harder to read, which means it’s harder to get those all important conversions.
What you want on your business site is text that’s inviting and easy to read, with heading and subheadings that stand out. Since you’re going to optimize your site for SEO, you’re going to use these headings more than usual, so it’s important that they look good. Theme should come with a collection of very impressive fonts and the ability via the settings panel to change the look and feel.
What Are The Options And Features?
A site with an adjustable header and footer will be easier to customize and adjust as your site grows. You should also look for widget support – you never know what WordPress plugins you’ll need to integrate with your business site, so it’s important to have some flexibility.
Finally, remember that the most important thing a theme can have is support – a site that isn’t compatible with the newest versions of WordPress is a security risk no matter how good the theme looks!
Is It Mobile Responsive?
With mobile devices now dominating the online space it’s only logical that you as the business owner would want a theme that can be viewed across all these devices, some themes are even compatible with gaming console browsers but the most important aspect is to ensure you can be viewed by the most common handheld devices.
This one element alone can decide on what traffic you get and from where and who, it’s an important element and any theme you consider should have this ability.
